Sacred Art Telling Stories of St. Elisha

St. Elisha
The anonymous artist of this medieval French illumination evidently had a few stories he wanted to share about St. Elisha (e-LIE-sha):

Elisha's Separation from Elijah
As they (Elijah and Elisha) walked on still conversing, a fiery chariot and fiery horses came between the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind, and Elisha saw it happen.
~ 2 Kings 2:112a

The Jeering Boys
While he on the way (to Bethel), some little boys came out of the city and jeered at him:  "Go away, baldy; go away baldy!"  The prophet turned and saw them, and he cursed them in the name of the LORD.  Then two she-bears came our of the woods and tore forty-two of the children to pieces.
~ 2 Kings 2:23-24

The Miracle at the Grave of St. Elisha
by Jan Nagel (1596)
And this artist shared one  of St. Elisha's many miracles, this one after his death ...

The Miracle at the Grave of Elisha
At that time of year, bands of Moabites used to raid the land.  Once some people were burying a man, when suddenly they saw such a raiding band.  So they cast the man into the grave of Elisha, and everyone went off.  But when the man came in contact with the bones of Elisha, he came back to life and got to his feet.
~ 2 Kings 13:20b-21
