St. John the Baptist ... "Behold the Lamb of God!"

St. John the Baptist
by an Anonymous Illuminator
June 24 honors the birth of a great New Testament Saint ... St. John the Baptist.  The cousin of our Lord, the one who prepared multitudes for Jesus' mission.  It was St. John the Baptist who first referred to Jesus as "The Lamb of God" ...

John 1:29 ~ The next day he (John the Baptist) saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world."

John 1:36 ~ … and as he (John the Baptist) watched Jesus walk by, he said, "Behold the Lamb of God."

The 12th Chapter of Exodus gives some strong clues as to why John used this title for Jesus.  This Old Testament chapter explains the Passover Ritual ... all the details that the Hebrew people had to tend to for their departure from Egypt, including sacrificing a lamb.

So, besides it being a good day to honor the birth of John the Baptist, it could also be a good day to recall how Jesus was like the Passover Lamb ... He was sacrificed for humanity and Passover Lambs were sacrificed for the enslaved Hebrews in Egypt.
