St. Samuel is a good saint to turn to when you really want to do God's will ... when you are really trying to listen to Him ... trying to hear what He has in mind for you ...

When Samuel went to sleep in his place,
the LORD came and revealed his presence,
calling out as before, "Samuel, Samuel!"
Samuel answered, "Speak, for your servant is listening."
~ 1 Samuel 3:9b-10

CCD Activity Idea: A St. Samuel Quilt:

1) Divvy out 25 6"x 6" pieces of colored paper to the class
(Depending on the size of you class, some kids might get more than one piece.)

2) Assign one verse from 1 Samuel 3 for each square of colored paper.

3) Have the students copy the verse(s) from the Bible onto their square(s) of paper.

4) Have the students decorate the edges of the squares, perhaps with symbols relevant to the verse.

5) Because 1 Samuel 3 has 21 verses, there will be four extra squares.  Use one or two square(s) for a "title," maybe something like, "Samuel's Calling."  Use the last two or three squares for illustrations, decoration, or to note St. Samuel's Feast Day of August 20.

6) Arrange the squares in order on a bulletin board, creating a 5 square by 5 square St. Samuel Quilt.

7) If desired, attach a string of ribbon along each row and column division, giving the project an added quilt-like touch.

8) Send me a picture of your class's St. Samuel Quilt!

A Few Other St. Samuel CCD Ideas:

- If questions arise from the quilt project, be sure to address them.

- Help the class memorize 1 Samuel 3:9b-10.

- Discuss ways we can all try to listen to God.

- Read the full story of Samuel out of a picture Bible to your class.

- Together as a class, compose a short prayer to St. Samuel.  Have each student copy it on an index card, take it home, and encourage them to say the prayer once a day for nine days, creating a St. Samuel novena.
