St. Joel - A Good Prophet And Saint For Lent

Getting to Know Joel
February 2013 Issue of St. Anthony Messenger

In Catholic Sunday mass readings, we get very little of the works of St. Joel.  As a matter of fact, we here from him only once a year as a possible reading on the Vigil of Pentecost.  However, we do hear from this Prophet-Saint every year on Ash Wednesday (not a Holy Day of Obligation, but a VERY popular mass at my church!)

If you are looking for something special to do for Lent, consider studying St. Joel's book.  There are a total of  73 verses (4 Chapters - but 73 verses) in this Old Testament book, so that would mean 1.8 verses to read each day for 40 days.  Not too bad ... and reading just 1 or 2 verses a day would make it more realistic to occasionally take a look at some of the footnotes to help grasp the meaning of Joel's message.
