A Rare Painting of Some Old Testament Saints

Saints Melchizedek and Abraham

Catholic Churches often have LOTS of statues, paintings, and stained glass windows to remind parishioners of some great individuals who have gone before us.  It is rare, however, to find representations of Old Testament saints.  This past week, I stumbled across a wonderful painting of the Old Testament saints Abraham and Melchizedek at the beautiful St. Mary's Church in Fredericksburg, TX.  The painting illustrates the time after Abram (later to be called Abraham) defeated an aggressive group of four kings; and in appreciation, Melchizedek brought bread and wine to Abram with a blessing (Genesis 14).  I'm assuming that the man in the background is Abram's nephew, Lot, who was rescued from the four kings by his uncle.

The Church sees in the gesture of the king-priest Melchizedek, who "brought out bread and wine," a prefiguring of her own offering.     ~ Catechism of the Catholic Church 1333
