Kind of a Sad Day

A very dear friend of mine died yesterday.  Msgr. Vincent John Fecher was such a devoted priest and good man.  He generously helped me get through chunks of Latin in the 2004 Roman Martyrology so I could work on my second book.  And, even though the last church he pastored was tiny ... about 50 or 60 people in attendance each week at a small chapel way out in the country ... he nonetheless put his full heart into each mass.  His desire was to merely be a voice for the Lord; he would point to the tabernacle behind him and say that he hoped the homilies would come from there, from God, through his voice.

- just two years ago.
During the last ailing months of his earthly life, Fr. Vincent used to share that he hoped to be like a stray puppy that the boy Jesus might notice while separated from his parents in Jerusalem.  Fr. Vincent said that he hoped Jesus would pick him up and beg Mary and Joseph to let him go home with the Holy Family.

After they had completed its days, as they were returning, the boy Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it.
- Luke 2:43

Oddly, I received the call about Fr. Vincent's death (he disliked the term "passed away") while I was out walking our dog ... who used to be a stray puppy before we adopted her.
